Holly* describes her experience with motherhood as ‘bittersweet.’ She had her first two children very young, in a relationship marked by abuse. For their stability and safety, they were placed in foster care resulting in trauma, anxiety, and loss of confidence for Holly.
“It was the hardest, and saddest time of my life, loving and wanting them so much, but having to do what was best for them, was very difficult.”
It took a kind heart, a listening ear, and a reliable shoulder for Holly to recover, capable of parenting with confidence, joy, and stability. Mothers have a special place in our hearts. They nurture the children who will grow up to be the future stewards of our world. We need only to look towards the Blessed Virgin Mary to realise both the joy and the ultimate sacrifice of being a mother.

Looking after those who minister to us
For as long as he can remember, Fr John Goulding wanted to be a priest.
The desire to serve others was there in him even before he was sent to complete his schooling with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart at Douglas Park at age 13.
But it was from there Fr John embarked on a journey that ultimately led him to the priesthood – a vocation that lasted more than 45 years of selfless service shepherding God’s people in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Australia.
Honouring those who follow in Christ’s humble, simple footsteps
Over his 45 years as a worker in God’s vineyard, Fr John Goulding has tried to live a life of service in the footsteps of Christ.
Now in retirement, Fr John is grateful for the service of the Diocese’s Clergy Support Foundation Health and Wellbeing Team, who have helped him in this next stage of his life.
“They have been absolutely marvellous to me. If I need any assistance, they come straight away.
“I do try and thank them, but I don’t think I can thank them enough.”
Serving and caring for retired priests a “privilege”
Clergy Health and Wellbeing coordinator Peter Noone says it is a privilege that he gets to work with all members of the clergy in the Diocese of Parramatta at their different stages of life.
Joining the Diocese’s Clergy Health and Wellbeing team in January this year, Peter works alongside fellow coordinator Ellen Small and Head Mark Buhagiar in caring for our priests from the seminary to retirement.
“We interact with everyone on their journey,” Peter explained.
“It’s great to be able to meet and spend time with people and hear their stories and support them in any way we can.”
