About the role

The Property Lawyer will provide expert legal advice and services relating to property transactions, disputes and management. The individual will be responsible for reviewing and negotiating a wide range of property-related legal documents, including leases, purchase agreements and development contracts. This role requires a thorough understanding of property law, commercial law and real estate transactions. The Property Lawyer will work closely with internal stakeholders, and external legal partners to ensure compliance, mitigate risks, and resolve legal issues effectively. This role sits within the property team and represents a fantastic opportunity for a lawyer to gain valuable exposure to the commercial facets of property law.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Legal Advice & Counsel

  • Provide legal advice to internal teams and stakeholders on property-related matters, including acquisitions, disposals, leasing, contract review, lease administration, and development projects.
  • Conduct legal due diligence for property transactions and developments, ensuring that all potential risks are identified and managed.

Drafting & Review of Legal Documents:

  • Review and negotiate a wide range of property-related legal documents, including leases, purchase agreements, contracts, deeds, and development agreements, as well as organising necessary execution and implementation of the agreement
  • Prepare documentation for property transactions, including transfers of ownership, titles, and registration.

Property Transactions & Disputes:

  • Handle property acquisitions, sales, and leasing transactions from start to finish, ensuring that all steps are legally compliant and aligned with commercial intent.
  • Assist in resolving property disputes (particularly with tenants) through negotiation, mediation, or litigation, as required.

Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Provide advice to the development team to ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal laws, including real estate regulations, zoning laws, and environmental requirements.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on potential legal risks and assist in the implementation of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor changes in property law and ensure that all legal documents and practices remain current and in compliance with new regulations.

Client & Stakeholder Interaction:

  • Maintain relationships with external clients, developers, real estate agents, and other legal professionals.
  • Serve as a point of contact for property-related legal matters, offering timely and accurate guidance.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as finance, property management, and construction, to ensure seamless coordination on property projects.

Legal Research & Continuing Education:

  • Conduct legal research on property law issues to ensure that clients and the organisation are informed of the latest legal developments.
  • Stay current with changes in property law, market trends, and best practices.
  • Attend relevant seminars, webinars, and training sessions to further develop legal expertise.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and organised legal files, ensuring that all property-related legal documents are properly stored and easily accessible.
  • Prepare legal reports and presentations for senior management or clients, summarising findings and recommendations on property matters.

Qualifications: Education

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a property lawyer or real estate attorney.
  • Extensive experience with property transactions, leasing, land use, and commercial real estate law, particularly with ground leases.
  • Proven track record in negotiating complex property-related contracts and agreements.
  • Experience in handling property disputes, particularly disputes over leasehold outgoings.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of property law, including land use, zoning, development, and real estate transactions.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to build relationships with stakeholders, and other professionals.
  • Detailed understanding of the operations of ground leases.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based, with occasional site visits or travel to client locations and property sites.
  • Standard office hours, with occasional need to work after hours or evening.
