About the role

The Diocese of Parramatta is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of safeguarding and maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward abuse in any form. We are currently seeking an experienced Training & Development Specialist to join our Safeguarding – Prevention, Healing and Support Team in a permanent part-time role (0.6 FTE), working 3 days per week or 22.8 hours per week.

About you

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering and supporting training and education initiatives for clergy, parish employees, Diocese employees, key Diocese stakeholders and parishioners across the Diocese. The focus of the training will be on safeguarding practices and ensuring our church communities remain safe and supportive environments for all.

This position requires flexibility, as training sessions are often scheduled outside standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, particularly Saturdays. Sessions are arranged on an ad hoc or as-needed basis, depending on audience availability.

Key Areas of Training Responsibility:

1. Administration of the Diocese’s Online Safeguarding Learning Management System (LMS)

You will manage and oversee the daily operations of the Diocese’s Safeguarding LMS. This includes enrolling users, tracking training progress, maintaining accurate records, generating reports, and providing technical support to ensure a smooth learning experience for all users. Your efforts will ensure compliance with safeguarding requirements and the efficient delivery of online learning content.

2. Assisting in the Delivery of Face-to-Face Safeguarding Training

Working collaboratively with Safeguarding personnel, you will assist in organizing and presenting in-person safeguarding training sessions at various parish locations. This includes logistical coordination, participant engagement, and supporting the delivery of consistent, high-quality training to clergy, staff, and volunteers, reinforcing our commitment to a safe and inclusive church environment.

3. Development of Safeguarding Training Modules

You will play an active role in the creation and enhancement of safeguarding training materials tailored to the diverse needs of our Diocesan stakeholders. This includes content writing, reviewing, and designing modules that are informative, engaging, and aligned with both Church values and current safeguarding standards. Your contributions will support a culture of continuous learning and safety awareness throughout the Diocese.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Brings extensive experience in training and development, particularly within a Catholic context
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to upholding the ethos and values of the Catholic Church
  • Possesses well-developed skills in engaging learners of all ages and from a wide range of roles
  • Has up-to-date experience in managing online learning platforms and systems
  • Maintains a firm commitment to a zero-tolerance approach to abuse
  • Displays maturity, empathy, and the expertise necessary to respond to the concerns of vulnerable adults
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Outlook, including calendar management, email organisation, and scheduling meetings.
  • Is available to deliver training sessions on weekends and evenings across Diocesan parishes

Skills and Experience:

  • Extensive experience in delivering engaging, face-to-face training to adult learners
  • Proven expertise in the development, implementation, and management of Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • A strong understanding of the Catholic Church, its mission, and the dynamics of parish communities
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including clergy and parish staff
  • High level of discretion with a proven ability to handle sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality
  • Sound knowledge of safeguarding principles, child protection legislation, and Respect@Work guidelines
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong skills in records and data management with high attention to detail

Essential Qualifications:

  • Hold Relevant Tertiary Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in Education, Training & Assessment and/or learning
  • Hold Safeguarding and /or Church environment experience: Somebody who has experience working in a safeguarding capacity in a similar or same environment whilst understanding the complexities of a faith-based organisation and community.
  • Commitment to Safeguarding and Ethical Practice: Exhibit a deep commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and upholding ethical standards in all aspects of your work, ensuring that every action is guided by a strong moral compass and respect for the dignity of others.
  • Current Working With Children Check: Valid certification demonstrating compliance with child protection requirements, ensuring the ability to work safely with children and vulnerable individuals.
  • Current Driver’s Licence: A valid driver’s licence, enabling travel for work-related purposes, as required.
