Come Home to the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church is a community that embraces all individuals, no matter where you are on your spiritual journey. We recognise that sometimes doubts, questions, or experiences may cause you to step away or pause the practice of your faith.

We want you to know that your story matters and your presence is cherished.

Our community is here to listen, to accompany you, and to provide a space where you can explore and deepen your faith. We understand that returning to the Church is a personal decision, and we want to assure you that you are free to take your time, ask the tough questions, and seek the answers you need.

Life’s circumstances lead each of us on different paths – no matter where you are on your faith journey, you are always welcome in our Church with love, acceptance, and support. Whether you are simply starting to explore parts of the Catholic faith or rekindling a flame in your heart, our community is here to help you with open arms, ears and hearts.

Within the Catholic Church, you will find a wealth of spiritual nourishment, guidance, and the Sacraments that can bring solace, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose. We have vibrant communities, opportunities for growth and learning, and a supportive network ready to welcome you back home.

We invite you to reach out to a local parish, speak with a priest or spiritual advisor, or connect with individuals who can provide the support and guidance you seek. Many people in our faith community can help you navigate your faith journey, address any concerns or reservations you may have, and provide a safe space for open and honest conversations.

Remember, you are not alone

We understand that returning to the Church is a personal and transformative journey. The Church is here for you, ready to walk alongside you and offer a place where you can rediscover the beauty, peace, and spiritual nourishment that comes from embracing your faith. Many individuals have walked a similar path and have found their way back to the Church, finding renewed faith, joy, and a deeper connection with God and their community.

May you find comfort in knowing that you are loved, welcomed, and supported. We invite you to explore the possibilities, ask questions, and open your heart to the journey of faith once again.

Want to talk to someone about your journey home to the Church?

What can you do to reignite your faith?

Spend time in reflection and prayer

Begin by taking time for personal reflection and prayer. Consider the reasons why you desire to return to the Catholic Church and reflect on your faith journey and relationship with God. Pray for guidance and discernment as you move forward.

Participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)

The Sacrament of Reconciliation offers the opportunity to confess any sins or mistakes, seek forgiveness, and reconcile with God and the Church. It is a vital step in returning to full communion with the Church.

Start attending Mass as often as you can

The Eucharist is the central act of Catholic worship, and participating in Mass helps nourish your faith and reconnect with the Church community. Listen to the Word of God, receive spiritual nourishment through the Eucharist, and engage in communal worship. If you haven’t visited your local church or are nervous about returning alone, you are welcome to visit at quiet times or you can contact the parish office and let them know your concerns. Often, having a conversation with someone from the parish team can help you feel at ease.

Seek Spiritual Guidance

Reach out to the parish priest at your local church or a spiritual director who can provide guidance and support throughout your journey of returning to the Church. They can offer counsel, answer any questions you may have, and help you navigate the process of reintegration.

Engage in faith formation and education

Your local parish may hold classes, workshops, or study groups, and the Diocese often holds events to help all of us – no matter what stage we are in our faith journey – to deepen our understanding of Catholic teachings, traditions, and the richness of the faith. You can also browse our collection of Catholic resources and find topics that interest you and help you learn in your preferred medium – whether it’s an article, book, video or podcast.  This will further enrich your spiritual journey and help you grow in your relationship with God.

Remember that each person’s journey is unique

The process of returning to the Catholic Church will be as unique as the person who is returning. We recommend reaching out to someone in your local church community, or to our Diocesan office, so we can support your return.
