FreeCatholic Mission is hosting the visit of His Eminence Cardinal Giorgio Marengo I.M.C., Apostolic Prefect of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to Australia in June.
At only 49 years of age, the Italian is the youngest member of the College of Cardinals. He was appointed by Pope Francis in August 2022 to be the first Cardinal of Mongolia and serve the 1,500 Catholics living in the central Asian country, which has a population of 3.3 million.
The Catholic Church was only officially recognised in Mongolia in 1992, so this community is the newest and smallest Catholic community in the world. In another ‘first’ for the Holy See, Pope Francis visited Mongolia in 2023, the only pope to do so. Today, Mongolia has six Catholic churches.
As part of his Australian visit, the Diocese of Parramatta will host Cardinal Marengo with Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv on Saturday, 22 June 2024, when they will concelebrate the Vigil Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta, at 6pm.
All are welcome to attend the Vigil Mass and join Cardinal Marengo in the Cloister Function Room afterwards to hear more about his work over some light refreshments.
The event is free to attend, however registration is essential.
