Fr John O’Neill, Diocesan Priest.
Fr John O’Neill was recently farewelled from St John Vianney Parish, Doonside, after 64 years of faithful priestly service, including more than 42 years walking alongside, guiding and serving that parish community.
For more than six decades, Fr John stood at the altar, celebrated the Sacraments, preached the faith with conviction, formed parishioners, inspired vocations, visited families, and helped bring people closer to God.
When Fr O’Neill speaks about the Mass, his words are simple and full of wonder: “You never get used to it… a wonderful miracle every time. Changing bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.”
At his farewell, Fr John’s message to his parish was simple: “Keep the faith.”
His life has been a witness to that same call.
Even in retirement, in sickness and in health, our priests continue to carry out God’s ministry without question, staying involved in parish life and doing our Father’s work for as long as they are able. Their vocation never ends, and neither does our shared responsibility to support them in any way we can.
As Catholics, we are called to ensure there is always someone to care for our retired priests and those in ill‑health, just as they will always love and care for us.
